That Joe Mixon contract is pretty much what should be the foundation of Cook's extension. Mixon got 4-yrs, $48m total - $12m avg per season. We're not sure what the guarantees were, but I would expect his 2021 cap hit to be close to $10m-$12m range depending on how its structured.
Mixon was picked in the same round in 2017 as Cook, has 1,400+ total scrimmage yards for the Bengals the last 2 seasons and has been more durable (although he does have migraine issues like Harvin did). Cook has only had 1 season over 1,000 scrimmage yds and his durability in a 16/17-game season is questionable.
Assuming Reiff is gone in 2021 and Ngakoue is resigned to an extension after the 2020 season, you'll still have 7 players with cap hits in 2021 of at least $10m (Cousins, Barr, Hunter, Thielen, Ngakoue, Harrison Smith & Kendricks). Depending on Ngakoue's number and if the total 2021 cap falls to $175m, you're looking at anywhere between 60-70% of the total cap taken up by 7 players - not including Cook, Harris or O'Neill (who's guaranteed to get a $10m+ a yr contract next offseason, too).
You can't give out $10m+ a yr contracts to everyone...and quite frankly, O'Neill is potentially more important than Cook is...
I'm just not seeing the math work out for a Cook extension at even Mixon's level beyond 2020....

Meh, put the cash in guards. Correction....in the "right" guards....I honestly don't want any more cash poured into Elflein or Dozier beyond 2020....

Anybody saying here that still thinks he's going to holdout is running on low mental wattage...

What no new deal would mean for Dalvin Cook, Vikings Dalvin Cook said all the right things Wednesday when asked whether he will work out a contract extension with the Minnesota Vikings before the start of the season on Sunday. He says he's not worried, he knows he has to wait his turn and won't look around the NFL at other backs like the Bengals' Joe Mixon and the Saints' Alvin Kamara, who are getting new deals. Cook, who is on the verge of playing out the final season of his rookie deal for $1.33 million, was subdued and didn't back down from the hard questions. link
