Uncle , "will be removed from the 2020 cap immediately upon notification a player is opting out" Wouldn't that have to occur before any bonus is removed? You're right...sorry about that, I didn't read enough of the actual tweet before my mind started working on the possibilities with all the add'l cap space... Well, we could just right-off the 2020 season with Kirk, Hunter, Barr, Kendricks all opting out to keep Cook for 2021+....

I don't see that happening, especially for a position some feel you can throw a fifth rounder on the field and get the same production from. Rick obviously does not have that same opinion I just hope he doesn't go over $10 mill a year.

NFL Network's Tom Pelissero thinks the Vikings are limiting Cook's Training Camp workload because they're working on a long-term contract... "This situation has to come to a head soon," Pelissero said. "Either Cook is gonna become one of the higher-paid running backs in the NFL on a fair, long-term deal with the Vikings or they're eventually gonna reintegrate him into practice and he will be playing out the final year of his rookie contract."

NO BIG CONTRACT!!!
Let it play out and maybe he stays healthy all year for a change, trying to work on future contract. Then let him walk next year

OK, somebody explain to me how this makes any sense. I dont understand, if they fully intend to extend him anyway, why they would take it easy on him now but not last year or the year before? Hell even if they dont intend to extend him, wouldnt it still be the same approach if they are looking at this year? I think dot com Tom needed to fill a twitter quota or something on this nugget.

You're probably right about Tom as Zimmer said this yesterday during the team's first practice w/ pads ( link): Zimmer went on to say that although the pads are on, he wants his team to remain injury free through the preseason. "I want to get to September 13 healthy if we can..."Plus, they did attempt to bring Griffin back (we don't know what the Vikes offer was), which indicates to me not all of the remaining cap space in 2020 is devoted to Cook. If they do end up extending Cook, I'd want as much of his guaranteed money to "hit" in 2020 as possible, so if we need to release him in the future for whatever reason, we're not eating a bunch of dead cap space. On the other hand, Courtney seems to be on the "don't hurt Dalvin during contract talks" train...

maybe Tom is her "source"? seems to work for political stories.

It should be known that Courtney has deleted that tweet I embedded from her account earlier today than contained her assertion that Cook is in contract talks... EDIT: and as I finished hitting the post button for this, Courtney tweets out again that the team is trying to work on a contract w/ Cook...

It appears Courtney was onto something yesterday because today she's reporting that the Vikings and Cook have reached an "impasse on contract talks" ( link). Negotiations regarding a contract extension between running back Dalvin Cook and the Minnesota Vikings have reached an impasse, multiple league sources told ESPN.
Barring any changes, Cook, 25, is set to play out the final year of his $1.33 million rookie deal.
Minnesota anticipated an extension being finalized before the start of official practices last week. After failing to strike a deal upon meeting with Cook's representation in the Twin Cities area Saturday, the Vikings aimed to wrap up negotiations before the third day of padded practices.
With no deal in place, the Vikings are choosing to shelve negotiations for now, according to multiple sources.
Cook reported for training camp on time on July 28 and has participated in all meetings and practices to date. Without an extension, the running back was limited to individual drills during the first day of padded practice Monday and saw an increase in his workload during the team portion Tuesday. Cook is expected to be full go in practices going forward.
Sources indicate that the Vikings have not pulled their offer from Cook but that they do not plan to engage in further negotiations at this point. Should the running back decide to play out the final year of his current deal, Minnesota will then have the option to place the franchise tag on him during the 2021 offseason.

With the coming boycott their viewers going way down os going to decrease cap next year by a lot. Smart not to do a deal right now. Lets see him stay healthy a whole year.

I am sure both sides are aware of those numbers and it seems like the Vikings are in the better position to wait things out. If Cook is smart he should take the Vikings offer on the table because his risk is a lot higher than the Vikings risk at this point.

I hope the cap drops way down next year it will hurt the players who are the ones disrespecting our flag. Maybe then they will realize the damage they done and stop politicizing sports!
