www.vikings.com/news/article-1/Vikings-Re-sign-Timeless-Terence-Newman/a07e0130-5fbb-4622-aefe-85a32f7f9268It's official! Assuming that he can still play, we seem to be pretty set at CB. I don't know if Newman slides into the nickel (slot)... or Waynes does... of if Alexander does (for Munnerlyn) and Waynes continues to back up both CB spots. Either way, we should be OK on the back end (except for that other safety position). Defensively, we could use a LB. That's about it. (And maybe an upgrade at the safety position opposite Smith) So... our draft should be a pretty heavy offesively- orientated draft.

I will say this is good but hopefully he will not be starting by the end of the season. It's a young mans game for a reason. I doubt he plays the entire season healthy.

Yeah, at that age you just have to wonder... I remember being 38. Barely... For me it was a noticeable difference from being 35. It's not if, but when will it catch up to him?

It's a good depth signing. It's Trae Waynes time to start, however. Hopefully, that will keep Newman healthy...only playing in certain situations. I didn't have that much doubt...I think Zim wants him to help coach when he hangs up the cleats.

I think it's great, depth and system familiarity are awesome. Not to mention I love seeing older guys who still play.

I'm definitely glad that he's back and he'll provide some much needed depth in the secondary; however, I'm not sure he or Waynes will immediately start in the inside CB (aka, the Nickel) slot where Captain usually plays. It is entirely possible that Newman may actually move back to S when he's not a backup on the outside behind Waynes/Rhodes. I would personally still like a more dedicated slot CB like Nickell Robey-Coleman back there w/ Alexander, Newman or Waynes backing that up...
I think what Newman does is offer some really nice flexibility depth on the back end...

I could even see Zim bringing in Leon Hall for a season.

I don't think they're even close to set in the secondary now. Alexander and Waynes are not very proven, and there is zero depth behind the top 4 guys (remember you basically have 3 starting CBs now). In this loaded secondary draft, I'd still draft 2-3 of them.
If available, I'd definitely look at these guys (projection right now):
Obi Melifonwu, SS, Uconn, 6'4" 224 lbs - #33 (1-2) Chidobe Awuzie, CB, Colorado, 6' 202 lbs - #39 (1-2) Kevin King, CB, Washington, 6'3" 200 - #55 (2) Desmond King, FS, Iowa, 5'10" 201 - #57 (2) Ahkello Witherspoon, CB, Colorado, 6'3" 198 - #75 (2-3) Marcus Williams, FS, Utah, 6'1" 202 - #77 (2-3) Brian Allen, CB, Utah, 6'3" 215 - #153 (4-5) Damontae Kazee, CB, San Diego State, 5'10" 184 - #171 (5) Tedric Thompson, SS, Colorado, 6' 204 - #241 (7) Montae Nicholson, SS, Michigan State, 6'2" 212 - #295 (7-FA)
In a realistic draft, going in with Murray signed at RB and Reiff and Remmers at OT, you could really load up on DBs if these guys fell just a little bit (meaning you could actually get guys projected at 39 at 46, or 77 at 86 for example). I'm not very high on Waynes or Alexander, and Newman is a very short term rental, so I'd target DBs higher than most. I also want to upgrade WR, LB and depth on the DL. I don't like the DL and LB depth in this draft, but WR is good.
So lets say you go into the draft and go with a DL/LB in 2, a WR in 3, and then DBs.
2. TJ Watt, DE, Wisconsin - yes, I could easily see them drafting him to play DE, since they seem to like the guys that have the size and athleticism of a 34 OLB to play DE, and Watt has good length. 3. Ahkello Witherspoon, CB/FS, Colorado 3. Chad Hansen, WR, Cal 4. Alex Anzalone, OLB, Florida 4. Brian Allen, CB/FS, Utah 5. Demontae Kazee, CB, San Diego State (nickel) 6. KD Cannon, WR, Cal 7. Montae Nicholson, S, Michigan State UDFA. Joe Williams, RB, Utah
So I'd roll with 4 DBs, 1 DE, 1 LB, 2 WRs and 1 RB as a FA. I wouldn't waste picks on other positions where there's no value. I might go with a TE in 2 though, Adam Shaheen. This is a much better defensive draft, so they are doing what they should: taking offensive players in FA to fill immediate holes, so they can go into the draft and target quality and value over immediate needs.

Terence Newman said it was a simple decision to come back to Vikings, knowing the roster. Wanted to "get that bad taste out of my mouth."
