I was on an old gator freighter. The USS Okinawa LPH3. Same class of ship , just out dated and all decommissioned...even located in San Diego.
My storerooms caught fire and smoke bellowing out like this, sucked down my share of smoke just trying to clear sailors out of there bunks.happened late at night, early morning. Luckily no injuries.but definitely not n a lot of fun
cant imagine one like it st sea
being it was in my storerooms. I even got lucky and got grilled by NIS, Niw most know as NCIS. Not fun either. One of my shipmates was given 15 minutes to get everything he owned off the ship, Rumor had it he was gay, I personally think if he was gay the captain wouldn’t have given him just 15 minutes to get off.if he was suspect as arsonist, yes .my theory

I was in a temporary assignment for 3 weeks onboard CV-41 Coral Sea. We had a squadron almost fail pre-cruise inspection so I had to go out during their workups to help fix their problems.
Heard fire fire fire announced and by location it was just off hanger bay. We were doing an unrep for fuel but CS had fires all time so not a big deal. Then I heard announced to get more fire teams there. Next thing you know they call General Quarters and we had to go to flight deck with our float coats. At the same time they announced emergency breakaway, meaning they stopped refueling from ship alongside. On flightdeck there was smoke pouring out of hanger bays and island doors. I watched as fueler got distance from us. In time the fire was put out.
Ended up being a rag storage room caught fire stacked rags too close to heat source. It fried the berthing right above it to a crisp, luckily no one was hurt. I was worried for a spell as had no news.
My guess is this new fire was contractors welding

The sailor they gave the 15 minutes to pack and get out was anti everything put out. John Paul Jones didn’t have to get a hair cut, etc, I am sure you know the type plundering. THey put my storeroom fire out by flooding out the space they de flooded it the next day and it started burning again, smaller storeroom filled with paper towels napkins, toilet paper etc, only the outside got wet, paper inside was still dry,,it got so hot some of the storage bins melted, even melted the sprinkler heads off the sprinkler system, do not know if they went off during the fire or not,
,memories, shipboard fires are no joke

Onboard there is no place for smoke to go and it makes fighting hard. Plus depending on type fire water can turn into steam and its nasty. You can’t just touch a door it might burn your hands to a crisp. Can only spend about 30 min per team due to air running out. Not easy fighting them. Just figuring out what type fire too, since they all require different methods to fight. Electrical, fuel, oil and other types.

When I was on LPH 3. USS Okinawa. I was deployed during the Iranian hostage crisis,,, we were the first amphibious assault ship too go into the Iranian gulf, our skipper came over our intercom telling us this.. he said you can bring in ships. But when you bring in helicopter carrier, packed with 5000 marines, we get there attention. if this ship is out of commission, it’s s big loss

He in a heap of a lot of trouble if found so. like the guy mentioned after the USS Okinawa Fire. Given just a few minutes to get all his belongings off ship. Word out he was gay. I don’t think that was the reason. If suspected of arson. I could see the Commanding officer wanting him off, if he was suspect I have no idea whether he was charged or not, would have interesting to have found out.
