Purp1eOne , thanks for asking. Another issue arose a couple days ago. His nurse told me he started complaining about indigestion and nausea. He vomited during the night and she said he brought up a coffee grounds like substance and that’s a sign of a GI bleed. They tested it for blood and it was positive. He has a history of bleeding ulcers. They gave him protonix through his IV and that curbed his acid reflux. Because of his mental state I haven’t been able to get his Nexium in him for quite a while. An extended release medication can’t be dissolved and put through a feeding tube, it causes gut atrophy. I was giving it to him in a teaspoon of applesauce. He has a swallowing strategy he has to follow for anything he takes by mouth. Swallow hard, swallow hard again then cough to clear any residual and swallow hard again. He hasn’t been comprehending any form of direction lately. I was giving him Pepcid and mylanta through the tube but neither of those helped his acid reflux anywhere close to what the Nexium did. They called in a GI doc for a consult but because of his many health issues she wouldn’t sign off on an endoscopy. His blood levels dropped two days in a row but they’ve stabilized now. The did stop his blood thinner (Xarelto) without that he’s at a higher risk of having a stroke, He has Afib. Doc did tell me his lungs have improved and It’s possible the GI bleed was coming from his ulcers. But without the endoscopy they can’t confirm it. If his blood levels remain stable he’ll probably be discharged in a day or two, but he won’t be allowed back on his blood thinner till he has a month of stable blood levels.

Movikx, Wow man not sure how you can keep up with all of that, sounds like a full time job. You are a good man movikx. Good news is no covid, sounds like he is getting better and with the possibility of taking him home in a day or two. Hang in there.

I admit I feel exhausted often. This is way more than the 70+ hours I used to spend at work. I get little cat naps in between his meds and treatments. The wife and I did take advantage of him being in the hospital. We made it out for our anniversary dinner to our favorite restaurant/Tap house last night. I overindulged, it’s been awhile I put down 8 pints of Loose Cannon during the two hours we were there. The wife drove us home

Good news, my dad is home! His breathing is much better. He’s really tired but that goes with his decreased heart function. The doc was really pushing for him to go to a rehab facility. I told him absolutely not! Our governor hasn’t lifted the visitor ban, and I’ll be damned if I’m putting him in a facility just to get the WuFlu! Then he started what seemed like a test. He started quizzing me about his feeding tube and pump, meds and breathing treatments, then he threw different glucose readings at me, wanting to know how much insulin i would give him. ( Definitely wasn’t gonna trip me up there, I have the sliding scale memorized) After he figured out I had everything down and I’m with him 24/7 he told me he felt much better about his home care. He does have home health care nursing and physical therapy scheduled to see him a couple times a week.

I want to thank all of you for the prayers for my dad, but it looks like his journey here on earth is coming to an end. He had a great night Saturday. He was talking up a storm. My grandsons were spending the night with us. He called out for them and my wife and I to come into his bedroom before he went to sleep so he could tell us all good night and he loved us. I think he knew what was coming and he was telling us goodbye. Things deteriorated fast after that. His lungs are filled with fluid and things are shutting down. I brought hospice in today. We’ll be starting morphine as soon as it arrives. I know this is for the best but I’m having a hard time letting go. I’ve been caring for him for 6 &1/2 years now and the bond and love I have for him has grown!
